I wouldn’t have succeeded on the golf course without the support and awareness of my parents. That’s why I’ve committed the mission and purpose of The Michelle McGann Fund to supporting families dealing with juvenile diabetes diagnoses, treatment plans and everyday functioning.
Every 17 seconds, an American is diagnosed with diabetes, and 208,000 people under the age of 20 have diabetes – the majority of which is Type 1. Learning how to live with juvenile diabetes is a huge challenge.
Families dealing with juvenile diabetes are often overwhelmed. There are doctors’ appointments to schedule and varying treatment plans from which to choose. While diabetes research has its place and plays a critical role in how doctors treat diabetes in the future, many families need help now.
Getting invaluable support
The Michelle McGann Fund’s mission and purpose is to empower families with the support and education they need to ensure a health today and tomorrow for their child. Some of the many complications from diabetes – such as vision problems, blindness, kidney disease, hypertension, amputations and others – can be avoided or minimized when children get the best treatment possible. Further, quality of life improves when diabetics follow proper preventive and treatment protocols.
Prevention and treatment can also help curtail expenses related to Type 1 diabetes. Over $245 billion – or 20 percent of total health care spending –is spent annually on diabetes-related healthcare in the U.S., and the individual cost burden for families can be overwhelming. As families become aware of complications, treatment options and the importance of diet and exercise, their children’s health and wellbeing improves accordingly.
The cornerstone of health
Families of diabetics need education and support to quickly get their children’s health on track. The Michelle McGann Fund is a driving force for promoting prompt diagnoses, proper treatment plans, and healthy, active lifestyles for children and families dealing with diabetes.
